Penn Badgley has often been critical of the morals of his serial killer character Joe Goldberg on Netflix’s “You.”
But, if given the chance to sit down and speak with his character face-to-face, the “Gossip Girl” alum, 36, says he’d show Goldberg something he hasn’t experienced enough: love.
“Let’s say he was a person I was obsessed with, and, somehow, I could meet him in a controlled circumstance, and he was interested in listening to me,” Badgley said in a clip from his podcast “Podcrushed,” published Wednesday. “I really, at this point, and I think I’ve been clear about how much I detest all of his deeds, so, in that context, I would actually try to love him, because, the truth is, he’s never gotten that.”
Badgley added that Goldberg is someone who “needs love.”
“Honestly, I just feel like I would look at him for a long time, and, because of my relationship to him, I would try to love him,” he said. “I’m not saying that he deserves that. I’m not saying that anybody else should do that. I’m saying I would try to love him. … I would hug him and I would hold him.”
In late October, Badgley made splash with his debut on TikTok, where he’s racked up 1.5 million followers. The “Gossip Girl” star’s most viewed video on the app, in which he shows off his smoth dance moves to Meghan Trainor’s “Made You Look,” has garnered over 26 million views.
In May, Badgley launched his podcast “Podcrushed,” in which he and co-hosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari discuss stories and conversations about middle school experiences.
