Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the state’s longest serving senator has decided to bow out of a reelection bid.

“The time has come,” she told Capitol Hill reporters. “It’s not till the end of next year. So don’t hold your breath. (But) there are times for all things under the sun and I think that will be the right time.”

Feinstein’s decision came after much speculation on whether she would decide to run for another term, given her age  and questions about her fitness for office. She was first elected in 1992.

Feinstein expects to endorse a candidate later this year

Feinstein’s seat is solidly Democratic in deep blue California. While highly unlikely a Republican will be able to win a statewide election in the Golden State, the seat has attracted the interest of several Democrats.
