It looks like 2017 all over again.

Beyoncé and Adele are once again going head to head in this year’s Grammy Awards nominations, where they are nominated for album of the year for “Renaissance” and “30,” respectively. The music superstars are also both vying for record and song of the year prizes (Beyoncé for dance floor anthem “Break My Soul” and Adele for breakup ballad “Easy on Me”).

The singers memorably faced off five years ago at the Grammys, when Adele’s “25” beat Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” for album of the year. The upset win sparked backlash from music fans and even drew an apology of sorts from Adele herself, who told journalists backstage at the show, “My album of the year (was) ‘Lemonade.’ … It was her time to win.”

Beyoncé accepts the best rap performance Grammy for "Savage" during the 2021 ceremony. The "Church Girl" singer leads the 2023 nominations with nine nods.

“They’re both icons, and they’re both people that continue to produce super-high quality art,” Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. says. “Vocally, they’re so extremely extraordinary – two of the best singers we have in our industry. But there was so much good music made this year. Our creative community never ceases to amaze and surprise me with the types of work that comes out, and the abundance of excellence that our voters have to choose from.”
