Banana Boat is expanding a recall it issued last year over the presence of a cancer-causing chemical in its scalp and hair sunscreen spray to include an additional batch.
The Food and Drug Administration said the initial recall for the product was announced in July. That recall said three batches of Banana Boat’s six-ounce “Hair & Scalp Spray SPF30” contained trace amounts of benzene, a carcinogen.
Benzene, which the Centers for Disease Control said is found in gasoline, is not an ingredient in the sunscreen, the FDA said earlier this week. Rather, the chemical was detected in the propellant that sprays the sunscreen out of the can.
Banana Boat, owned by personal hygiene product manufacturer Edgewell, said it would offer purchasers a refund, and advised them to throw the product away.

The recall last year covered the following batches.
- Lot code: 20016AF Expiration date: December 2022

Benzene at the center of dry shampoo recalls
- Benzene in aerosol spray bottles has prompted the recall of numerous dry shampoo products.
- In October, Unilever recalled 19 products sold under its top brand names such as Dove, Suave and TRESemmé after it detected “potentially elevated levels” of benzene.
- According to the CDC, long-term exposure to the aerosolized chemical can lead to the development of leukemia, the cancer that affects blood-forming organs like bone marrow.
