The Arizona Cardinals are set to hire Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach, ESPN and NFL Network reported Tuesday.
The 40-year-old Gannon will replace Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired last month after four seasons and a 28-37-1 record, including a 4-13 season mark in 2022.
Gannon led the Eagles defense for the past two years and has been on the staffs of the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and Indianapolis Colts in his career.
Under Gannon in 2022, the Eagles ranked eighth in total defense, ranking first in pass defense, and recorded 70 sacks – 15 more than any other NFL team.
But in the Eagles’ 38-35 Super Bowl 57 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the defense did not record one sack.
Gannon is the second Eagles assistant coach to be hired as a head coach this offseason. The Indianapolis Colts introduced Shane Steichen, who was Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator, as their new head coach earlier Tuesday.
EAGLES OFFSEASON LOOKAHEAD:Free-agency exodus? Several players set to hit market
The Cardinals are essentially in rebuilding mode this offseason after general manager Steve Keim left the team to focus on his health, and might begin the year without quarterback Kyler Murray, who tore his ACL in a December game against the New England Patriots.
The Cardinals defense ranked 14th in the league, but gave up 3,915 passing yards, 29 touchdowns through the air and finished in the bottom third of the league in sacks.
