A SCHOOL has been forced deny its pupils are identifying as cats and pooing on the floor.
Claims started to swirl on social media of students at Banff Academy in Aberdeenshire self-IDing as the felines.
1The council has denied the rumours of pupils identifying as catsPosts started to circle on local Facebook groups this week.
They were fuelled further when it was claimed pupils were defecating on the floor in protest of not being given a litter tray.
Concerned parents and guardians on the Real Banff and Macduff Community Group on Facebook have now taken to the page after Aberdeenshire council confirmed the rumours were in fact incorrect.
One local said the community needed to: “support our local school, rather than giving it a bad name.”
The council denied the claims, calling them “false rumours”
They added it was “disappointing” to see them continue to be spread.
A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council said: “We are aware of false rumours circulating online suggesting that Banff Academy has pupils identifying as cats requesting litter trays in the Academy’s toilets.
“It is disappointing to see this rumour continue to spread, however both Aberdeenshire Council and Banff Academy continue to focus on the well-being and education of our children and young people.”
The litter box hoax appears to have originated from a viral trend in America.
Eventually authorities were forced take action to formally declare the rumours as misinformation.
In recent years, the hoax has been used by right-wing figures primarily in response to school districts placing protections for transgender students.
