This comes weeks after Biden was mocked for stumbling over Rishi Sunak’s name in a speech praising the new PM’s appointment as a “groundbreaking moment”.
The 79-year-old said: “Just today, we’ve got news that ‘Rashid Sanook’ is now the prime minister.
“As my brother would say, ‘Go figure!’”
Speaking during a ceremony at the White House marking the Hindu festival of Diwali he called it “pretty astounding” and a “groundbreaking moment”.
Sunak, 42, is a practising Hindu and the first non-white PM.
The US president later tweeted: “Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
“Together, I look forward to enhancing our cooperation on issues critical to global security and prosperity, including continuing our strong support for Ukraine.”
