Electrician Gargrow, 41, stormed on to Crayford Greyhound Track in Dartford, Kent, before Wednesday’s 12.24 race, shouting: “Where’s James Turner?”
He then allegedly punched his rival before handing himself in to police.
Ms Routley, his partner for 18 years and mother of his two children, works at the stadium.
The 37-year-old is a paddock steward and is set to have met Mr Turner after coming up with the “Crayford Wiggle” — and hip-swinging flag wave performed before races.
A pal said: “Neil would never have done anything like this before, but it’s too much for him. Even after all of this he still loves Gemma.
“It was like a red mist descended. He didn’t know where he was or what he was doing.”
Mr Turner was said to have escaped serious injury and his dog Mythmaker went on to win at odds of 11/4.
The stadium is owned by Ladbrokes Coral, who broadcast races online.
A clip posted on Twitter had 150,000 views last night.
One fan wrote: “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Another claimed: “It’s common knowledge at the track what’s been going on.
“These things happen in life. But the attacker, no matter how angry he was, should have confronted the trainer after the meeting not while on parade.”
