Who is the Steelers’ kicker? Why Matthew Wright, not Chris Boswell, is kicking for Pittsburgh

The Steelers are without one of their longest-tenured and most recognizable players for “Monday Night Football” against the Colts in NFL Week 12.

Kicker Chris Boswell is not available for the contest. He has been the team’s starter at the position since 2015, but he hasn’t played since Week 7 because of a nagging injury.

As a result, the Steelers have moved on to their third different kicker of the 2022 NFL season. Initially, the team signed Nick Sciba to fill in for Boswell. Now, it is relying on a more seasoned player.

That would be Matthew Wright.

Wright has been kicking in the NFL since 2020, but he spent time with the Steelers during the 2019 offseason after going undrafted.

But who exactly is he? Here’s what to know about Wright and why he has been called into action for Pittsburgh.

Who is the Steelers’ kicker?

The Steelers’ kicker is Matthew Wright. He is in his third game with the team as an injury replacement for Chris Boswell. He has found success kicking in Pittsburgh this season — and in seasons past.

Wright, 26, first kicked in the NFL in 2020 as a member of the Steelers. He replaced Boswell for three games and made all 11 of his kicks (four field goals and seven extra points).

From there, Wright battled for the Lions’ starting kicker job in 2021 but he couldn’t win it. He didn’t remain unemployed long, as the Jaguars came calling when they needed a replacement for Josh Lambo. Wright came in, won the job and served as Jacksonville’s primary kicker during the campaign.

Wright made 21 of 24 field goal kicks with the Jaguars, showing good leg strength in the process. He made 4 of 6 from 50-plus yards. But he made just 13 of 15 extra point kicks, and the Jaguars elected to move on from him during the 2022 offseason.

This season, Wright initially kicked for the Chiefs as an injury replacement for Harrison Butker. He made all eight of his extra point tries but went 3 for 4 on field goal attempts.

Now, Wright is back with the Steelers, and he has performed decently. He had made all five of his extra point kicks but was just 5 of 7 on field goals before Monday night.

What happened to Chris Boswell?

Boswell hasn’t played since Week 7 because of a groin injury. The Steelers initially believed that he wouldn’t be out long term, but they placed him on injured reserve on Nov. 10. That put him out of action for at least four weeks.

Monday marks Boswell’s third game since being placed on IR, so he could return to action as soon as Week 14 against the Ravens. But given that the Steelers were 3-7 prior to Monday and look like long shots to make the playoffs, they don’t have to rush him back before he’s ready.

Before landing on IR, Boswell had made 12 of 16 field goal attempts and all nine of his extra point kicks this season. His 75.0 field goal percentage would be his lowest since he posted a mark of 65 percent in 2018.
