San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been ruled out of the 49ers’ Week 13 game vs. the Dolphins with a foot injury.

Garoppolo appeared to hurt his left ankle on a Dolphins sack early in the first quarter. He was seen leaving the field in a cart, and was later ruled out by the 49ers.

With him out, and Trey Lance already sidelined, rookie backup quarterback Brock Purdy — Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 NFL Draft — was called into action. Purdy, drafted out of Iowa State, had only appeared in three games prior to Sunday’s meeting vs. Miami.

Now, he’s being called on to help lead a 49ers victory in a pivotal race for both the NFC and AFC standings.

And he’s answering the call.

The 49ers hold a one-game lead over the Seahawks, plus a head-to-head tiebreaker against Seattle.

Here’s everything you need to know about Brock Purdy:

Who is Brock Purdy?

Brock Purdy is San Francisco’s backup quarterback, elevated from third string to primary backup after Trey Lance was lost for the season with a gruesome ankle injury on Sept. 18.

With Lance out for the 2022 season, Garoppolo took over the starting position, with Purdy squarely behind him in the No. 2 position. But the former’s injury forced the rookie into action.

Purdy is in his first season in San Francisco after a celebrated four-year career at Iowa State in which he completed 993 of 1,467 passes (67.7 percent) for 12,170 yards and 81 touchdowns to 33 interceptions. He also led the Cyclones to a 30-17 record as a starter.

For his career, Purdy was selected by the 49ers as Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 NFL Draft. He later became the first such selection to throw a pass in the regular season.

What is Mr. Irrelevant?

Mr. Irrelevant is the name given to the last player selected in the NFL draft. The term first came into use in 1976, when former USC and NFL receiver Paul Salata founded the event in Newport Beach, Calif.

The term is used in jest to illustrate the likelihood that a player makes a significant contribution to their respective teams. Such players are even awarded the “Lowsman Trophy,” a foil to college football’s Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the sport’s most outstanding player.

Brock Purdy stats

Purdy does not have many stats to his name entering Sunday’s game, appearing in only three regular-season games. That said, he did become the first Mr. Irrelevant ever to complete a pass in the regular season.

He accomplished that feat on Oct. 23 against the Chiefs, when he entered the game to complete 4 of 9 passes (44.4 percent) for 66 yards and an interception in the 44-23 loss.

At the time of this article’s publication, Purdy is 12 for 19 for 116 yards and two touchdowns against one interception vs. the Dolphins.
