On Sunday, Patrick Mahomes helped lead the Chiefs to a 26-10 win over the reigning Super Bowl champion Rams.

The next day, he added another branch to his family tree.

Mahomes became a father for the second time after his wife Brittany gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Nov. 28, 2022.

The Chiefs quarterback announced the birth of his son, as well as his son’s name, on Instagram Tuesday.

It’s no surprise that Mahomes decided to add a “Patrick Mahomes III” to the family, but the “Bronze” nickname that the couple chose for their son is drawing a lot more attention.

Where did that nickname come from? Here’s what to know about the Mahomes’ choice of name for their firstborn son.

What is Patrick Mahomes’ son’s name?

Mahomes’ son is named Patrick Lavon Mahomes III. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because that it’s the same as his father’s. The Chiefs quarterback is Patrick Lavon Mahomes II while his father, who pitched for the Mets and Red Sox during his MLB days, was the original Patrick Lavon Mahomes.

However, Mahomes II has given his son a unique nickname that will help differentiate him from the elder two Patricks.

Mahomes III will be known as Bronze Mahomes. That was a decision made, in part, to help distinguish him from his father and grandfather, but there is a reason that Bronze was chosen as his clever moniker.

Why is Patrick Mahomes’ son named Bronze Mahomes?

Mahomes explained that he actually got the inspiration for the nickname from his brother, Jackson.

Mahomes spoke about the process of picking a nickname at a news conference on Wednesday. He explained that he wanted the nickname to be unique, and Bronze checked a lot of boxes.

“When we had [our daughter] Sterling, we didn’t know if it was a boy or girl,” Mahomes explained, per the AP. “So, we thought of a name that could be a boy or girl. And we wanted them to have a connection.

I always wanted to do Patrick Mahomes III, every since I was a kid. I always thought it would be ‘Trey,’ you hear that a lot. So when me and Jackson were trying to think of something unique, he thought of ‘Bronze.’ It fit perfectly with Sterling. They can have that connection moving forward.

Certainly, that makes sense. Sterling is associated with silver and Bronze is associated with third place in sporting events, so it’s easy to understand why Mahomes thought “Bronze” was the gold standard among nickname options.
