Tennis shines as Australia’s 2022 Google sport search trends are revealed

In a year full of global news stories, sport has again captured the interest of Australians.

And out of all the major sports in the country, it is tennis that has dominated in 2022.

Google has released its annual ‘Year in Search‘ review, which compiles and ranks what Aussies have searched for online.

Last year’s trends saw the nation captivated by the NBA, whilst the AFL dominated search trends domestically.

2022, however, has been a different story.

Note: Trending searches indicate the searches that had “the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period” in 2022 compared to 2021, not the overall highest search volume.

Overall searches

  1. Wordle
  2. Australian Open
  3. World Cup
  4. Shane Warne
  5. Ukraine
  6. Novak Djokovic
  7. Ashes
  8. Ash Barty
  9. Olivia Newton John
  10. Betty White

If Australians weren’t busy completing their daily Wordle, they were keeping up to date with tennis’ Australian Open and football’s World Cup in 2022.

The shock passing of cricket great Shane Warne ranks No. 4 on the list, whilst Novak Djokovic’s deportation drama drew plenty of online attention.

Further down the rankings, the first men’s Ashes series since 2019 led to plenty of search traffic, along with the now-retired Ash Barty picking up her first-ever Australian Open title.

In line with the ‘overall searches’ ranking, the Australian Open scores the #1 rank in this year’s sports category.

The event is normally very popular, but its prominence was boosted this year by the performances of local talent, with Ash Barty (women’s singles) and Thanasis Kokkinkais and Nick Kyrgios (men’s doubles) picking up titles.

The Winter Olympics – where Australia picked up four medals – and Rugby League World Cup – which Australia won – also featured in the top five.

It is also apparent that the Australian Open isn’t the only tennis event Aussies are interested in, with the Indian Wells and ATP Cup tournaments both trending in 2022.

Tennis again flexes its might as a trending sport in the 2022 ‘Aussies’ ranking, which has Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios taking the top two spots (higher than the nation’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese).

Following them is Kyrgios’ doubles partner Thanasis Kokkinakis alongside Australian of the Year and wheelchair tennis legend Dylan Alcott.

Remarkably, the five sporting stars included in this list are all tennis players.

Global figures

  1. Novak Djokovic

Surprise, surprise … tennis also dominates the top trending list of ‘global figures’ from this year.

Novak Djokovic – who had his fair share of headlines in 2022 – joins Australian Open finalists Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev on the podium.

Closing out the list as the only other sports (and tennis) player is Danielle Collins, who lost to local star Ash Barty in the women’s final at Melbourne Park.
