Two teams who have each been beyond the Round of 16 at the finals on only one previous occasion apiece meet in search of their first wins of the tournament, as South Korea play Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Paulo Bento’s side, who finished fourth at the 2002 finals, began with a useful 0-0 draw against strong opponents in Uruguay but are still seeking their first shot on target in Group H, with captain Son Heung-min their key threat but still getting used to wearing a protective face mask.

The 2010 quarterfinalists Ghana impressed in a thriller against Portugal, pushing the more experienced team all the way in a 3-2 defeat that belied what is largely a youthful and inexperienced squad at Otto Addo’s disposal.

Bento appeared to suggest that Kim-Min jae‘s problem had been a consequence of his Champions League exertions with Napoli, helping his club top their group while conceding only six goals and handing out thrashings to Liverpool, Rangers and Ajax.

It remains unclear whether the centre-back will be able to play after Bento said he did not yet have enough “data” to know.

Kamaldeen Sulemana is a contender to start. The lightning-heeled Rennes winger was only on the bench for Ghana’s defeat to Portugal after missing two straight matches with an ankle issue picked up in training.

Freiburg attacker Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has been out of club action with a muscle issue but came on as a substitute in his nation’s opener.
