She’s Extreme has won the $1 million VRC Oaks, beating home Pavitra and Queen Air.

The filly proved too strong over the 2500m trip at Flemington, getting past Pavitra in the final 150 metres to win by one length, paying short odds of $2.25 with TAB.

It was the first Oaks win for jockey Tommy Berry, who produced a stellar ride and picked the perfect moment to let down the star three-year-old.

It was also the first victory in this race for trainer Anthony Cummings – the son of legendary Bart Cummings – after multiple attempts to join his father on the honour list.

Tommy Berry told Channel 10 after the race how much improvement She’s Extreme has shown in recent weeks.

“We had the right barrier just to put her to sleep and that’s what I had to do today,” he said.

“It was like Anthony flicked a switch with her – she’s a strong worker, always been a strong traveller, but leading into the Spring Champion, she started working like a stayer.

“I wasn’t worried about the 2500 – you can see how clean-winded she is and how relaxed she has become, she is a different horse now.”

Earlier in the day, Joyful Fortune bounced back from a disappointing run in The Everest by winning the Century Stakes.

The final day of this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival will take place on Saturday, with Champions Day at Flemington which will see the likes of Anamoe and Nature Strip in action.
