PSG is on a quest for a first-ever UEFA Champions League title, but they’ll have to get past six-time champions Bayern Munich if they’re going to keep those dreams of silverware alive. Bayern last hoisted the cup after beating PSG in the 2020 final.
The PSG-Bayern Round of 16 heavyweight showdown is considered one of the marquee matchups of the 2022/23 Champions League opening knockout stage given the stature of the teams — French champions vs. German champions — and the stars on each squad. But one or more of them might not take the field.
While Neymar is expected to play for PSG, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are coming off injuries and their level of fitness is still to be determined. Reports indicate that all three could lead the attack for PSG. Bayern will be without star signing Sadio Mane for the first leg, but they’re hopeful to get him back for the return match in Germany.
PSG will need all the star power they can muster given their recent poor form with two straight losses, including elimination from the French cup. Meanwhile, Bayern are unbeaten in their six matches in all competitions since returning after the World Cup break.

PSG vs Bayern Munich lineups
PSG manager Christophe Galtier is facing one of the biggest decisions of his first season at the helm. Does he start the injured Kylian Mbappe (thigh) and Lionel Messi (hamstring) even if they are not fully fit? Both were left out in the weekend loss to AS Monaco. PSG are already without the injured Nordi Mukiele and Renato Sanches.
PSG projected starting XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma (GK) — Hakimi, Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Mendes — Danilo, Verratti — Messi Soler, Neymar — Mbappe
PSG subs: Rico (GK), Bitshiabu, Ramos, Bernat, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Pembele, Etitike, Gharbi
Sadio Mane is still not ready to take the field for Bayern, and the German champions will look to teenager Jamal Musiala for attacking inspiration. Manager Julian Nagelsmann will also need to decide whether to start Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as the centre-forward, or insert Thomas Muller in front of Musiala. Noussair Mazraoui (heart condition), Manuel Neuer (broken leg), and Lucas Hernandez (torn ACL) are unavailable.
Bayern Munich projected starting XI (4-2-3-1): Sommer (GK) — Cancelo, Upamecano, Pavard, Davies — Goretzka, Kimmich — Sane, Musiala, Gnabry— Muller
Bayern Munich subs: Ulreich (GK), De Ligt, Coman, Choupo-Moting, Wanner, Sarr, Blind, Tel, Stanisic
