The world of top-level football moves fast, but it’s unlikely Jesse Marsch imagined he would be back in the dugout of a Premier League club just a week after being sacked by Leeds United.
The American was dismissed on February 6, 2023, with Leeds enduring a seven-game winless run and only above the relegation zone on goal difference. They managed a creditable 2-2 draw at Old Trafford following Marsch’s exit — although they allowed a two-goal lead to slip — but they were then beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Elland Road four days later.
Marsch had not spent long in the managerial wilderness, though. On February 14, he received the heart-warming news that he had been named the new man in charge of Southampton, who made Nathan Jones their shortest-serving manager in the Premier League era when they sacked him following nine defeats in 14 matches, most recently against 10-man Wolves.
There’s no doubt the former RB Leipzig boss is a fitting choice — “When the Saints go Marsching in” should be a popular song should he get off to a winning start — but he faces a sizeable task when it comes to Southampton’s bid for Premier League survival.

Premier League relegation odds 2022/23
After 22 matches, Southampton are one of just two teams who are odds on to be relegated from the Premier League this season. Only Bournemouth are firmer favourites to drop down to the Championship, at least with Sky Bet in the UK.
Marsch’s former employers Leeds United are also among the likely candidates to finish in the bottom three, and even Wolves — whose 2-1 win at Southampton brought about Saints’ second change of manager this season — are in tricky territory despite a five-point gap to 18th place.

Everton are also in deep trouble, although the appointment of Sean Dyche as manager seems to have lengthened their odds when it comes to survival, despite their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in Monday’s Merseyside derby at Anfield.Â
Nottingham Forest and West Ham are also among the bookmakers’ favourites for the drop.
