Phillies’ powder blue uniforms: What to know about the history of Philadelphia’s vintage alternate jerseys

A Thursday game in November is still a Thursday game.

That’s clearly the mentality the Phillies are employing, as it’s being reported they’ll be wearing their classic throwback powder blue uniforms in Game 5 of the World Series on Thursday. The beloved uniforms have been a Throwback Thursday staple at Citizens Bank Park since 2018.

They’re arguably the most popular of the Phillies’ jerseys, and they’ve been part of several recent iconic moments. Most notable is Bryce Harper’s walk-off grand slam against the Cubs in 2019, his first season with the Phillies.

The Game 5 fit is the product of a turn of events. Thursday was originally supposed to be a travel day for the Phillies and Astros, but Monday’s rainout pushed back the World Series schedule by a day and now Game 5 is on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

The blues are synonymous with the legendary Mike Schmidt, the MVP of the 1980 World Series (although the Phillies clinched against the Royals in their home pinstripe jerseys, not their road blues).

Which brings us to an important question about that ’80 team . . .

Who is Tim McGraw’s dad?

Another name you’ll find among the Philly faithful is McGraw, but not the country music star.

Tim’s father, Tug McGraw, had a long MLB career with the Mets and Phillies, logging a World Series and All-Star appearance with each. The elder McGraw spent 10 years with the Phils, from 1975-84.

Tug McGraw, in fact, threw the final pitch of the 1980 Series, striking out the Royals’ Willie Wilson to end Game 6 at Veterans Stadium.

Tim was in Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of this year’s Series and was sporting his dad’s jersey.

The power blue jerseys were the Phils’ road threads in the 1970s and ’80s. In the 21st century, the jerseys have evolved into one of the most popular in Philadelphia.
