Next Brazil World Cup match: Details on quarterfinal vs Croatia on Friday in Qatar

Opposition coaches and fans spotting signs of weakness in Brazil’s defeat to Cameroon would have lost faith in the evidence during a crushing 4-1 win over South Korea for the Group G winners that should have produced a wider scoreline.

Neymar, Richarlison, Vinicius Junior and company are now heavy favourites with the bookmakers to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup by winning their next three games in Qatar.

That inconsequential late loss to Cameroon is their only defeat since the 2021 Copa America final and they have not conceded more than once in their past 29 matches, keeping 20 clean sheets along the way.

Here’s when Brazil are playing next, their track record against their quarterfinal opponents, how to watch them in action and their route to another potential final.

When is Brazil’s next match?

Brazil have three days’ rest before facing a final-eight game against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia at Education City Stadium on Friday, December 9.

Croatia won a penalty shootout against Japan before Brazil’s dismantling of South Korea. The game finished 1-1 after normal and extra time as Zlatko Dalic’s men imitated their run to the 2018 World Cup final, where all of their knockout games went the distance.

The game kicks off at 6 p.m. local time. Here’s how that translates into time zones across some of the world’s major territories.

Brazil vs Croatia history

Croatia against Brazil at a World Cup is a relatively new feature of the tournament with two clashes on the biggest stage since 2006.

World Cup 2006, Germany

Brazil faced Croatia as defending champions in the 2006 World Cup with the two sides paired together in Group F in Germany.

The match was settled by one of the best goals of the tournament, as Kaka curled home a superb first-half effort to seal a 1-0 win in Berlin.

Croatia eventually bowed out in the group stage with two points from three games, as Brazil stormed through with three wins before coming unstuck against Zinedine Zidane and France in the quarterfinals.

World Cup 2014, Brazil

The two sides met again in the group stage, this time with Brazil as hosts of the 2014 World Cup and Croatia having failed to qualify for the 2010 competition.

The Samba Boys kicked off the tournament in dominant style despite Marcelo’s early own goal, as a Neymar brace and late finish from Oscar secured a 3-1 victory.

Croatia again fell at the first hurdle. Brazil were humbled 7-1 by eventual winners Germany on an infamous night in Belo Horizonte.

Brazil path to final

A blockbuster semifinal against eternal rivals Argentina is on the cards, with Lionel Messi aiming to win the World Cup in what looks sure to be his final tilt at the big prize.

It would be the first World Cup finals meeting between Brazil and Argentina since the last 16 in 1990, when Claudio Caniggia scored the only goal in Turin.

The Albiceleste must first beat the Netherlands, who share a rich World Cup history with Brazil. The Selecao have won one, drawn one and lost three of their meetings with the Oranje at the tournament.

The drawn semifinal did end with Brazil progressing to the 1998 World Cup final on penalties, while their most recent defeat was in the 2014 third-place playoff. A 2010 quarterfinal loss, when a Wesley Sneijder brace overturned Robinho’s early opener, cut far deeper.

Brazil’s full run in the knockout stage could look something like this: Last 16 vs South Korea, quarterfinals vs Croatia, semifinals vs Argentina/Netherlands, final vs England, France, Spain or Portugal.
