ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Vincent Kompany makes an emotional return to Manchester City on Saturday when he leads his Burnley side in an FA Cup quarterfinal at the Etihad Stadium.
Kompany lifted the trophy twice at City, with the second occasion in the 2019 final against Watford doubling up as his farewell outing. The Belgium defender played 360 games for the club and won 10 major honours as a talismanic captain.
Pep Guardiola has tipped Kompany as a potential successor at City but his immediate focus will be on beating the runaway Championship leaders and securing a fifth successive Wembley semifinal outing.

Kompany is adored here and Pep Guardiola has been laying it on thick. “Vincent Kompany, we have missed you,” the City boss wrote in his programme notes, having already flagged up the former Belgium centre-back as a potential successor. “Honestly, it will be a pleasure to play against Vinny. His work-ethic, knowledge of the game, passion, mentality… Vincent has everything.”

Man City vs Burnley lineups
England midfielder Kalvin Phillips made a belated first start for City in the previous round and will hope for some more game time. Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez are among those who could come in if Guardiola shuffles his pack as expected, with regular cup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega set to replace Ederson between the posts
Man City projected starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Ortega (GK) — Lewis, Stones, Laporte, Ake — De Bruyne, Phillips, Silva — Mahrez, Alvarez, Foden
Burnley’s 3-1 win a Hull in midweek took them to within three wins of an instant return to the Premier League, meaning Kompany could be minded to go with a strong lineup. City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis is unavailable but is nursing a foot injury in any case. Ashley Barnes scored when the sides met in this competition in 2018 and is expected to lead the line as Jay Rodriguez nurses a knock.
Burnley projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Peacock-Farrell (GK) — Roberts, Ekdal, Beyer, Maatsen — Cork, Cullen — Tella, Gudmundsson, Zaroury — Barnes
