Live: Lionel Messi in World Cup final as Argentina captain seeks to win first FIFA championship vs France

Lionel Messi has been waiting eight years to get back to the World Cup final and on Sunday he will get the chance to add the one major trophy that has eluded him so far when Argentina take on France.

Messi has already stated that the 2022 edition is his last World Cup, making the championship showdown in Qatar his last World Cup match. It would make for a storybook ending to a legendary career.

The icing on the cake would be potentially adding the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball awards from this 2022 tournament. If Argentina win the trophy, he’s practically a shoo-in to win the Golden Ball for best player, while he’s currently in the lead for the Golden Boot with five goals and three assists.

Sporting News is tracking what at this stage is arguably the biggest game of Lionel Messi’s career. We’ll have live updates on everything Messi, as Argentina battle France in the World Cup final.

Lionel Messi live updates, highlights from World Cup final 2022

2 hrs from kickoff: You have to believe there’s a team talk coming from Lionel Messi similar to the one he gave at the 2021 Copa America final.

Then, he urged them to think about the sacrifices made to be away from family and friends — including Dibu Martinez missing the birth of his daughter — and to finish the job and take the Copa America home to them.

Whether you understand Spanish or not, Messi in a team talk sounds very different to Messi doing interviews.

2.5 hrs from kickoff: Look at what Messi-mania has done before the final. Can you imagine if Lionel Messi wins it?

3 hrs from kickoff: Even Brazilians are rooting for Messi today. And Argentina fans and players are always taking digs at Brazil in the songs they’d sing to celebrate a potential win.

Argentina vs France lineups

The Argentina insiders say that the only doubt is whether it will be Lisandro Martinez in a five-man backline (5-3-2) or attacking winger Angel Di Maria getting the start wide right in a 4-4-2. Either way, it will be Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez paired up top.

Argentina (5-3-2, right to left): 23. E. Martinez (GK) — 26. Molina, 13. Romero, 19. Otamendi, 25. Li. Martinez, 8. Acuna — 7. De Paul, 24. E. Fernandez, 20. Mac Allister — 9. Alvarez, 10. Messi

France made it a point to make sure everyone saw that all their players, including those who reportedly fell sick, trained on the day before the match, though Kingsley Coman reportedly had to work out separately from the rest.

The biggest doubts involve Raphael Varane (illness), Ibrahima Konate (illness) and Olivier Giroud (knee), but Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano, look set to return to the starting lineup after sitting out the semis. If Giroud can’t go, Marcus Thuram will play wide left and Kylian Mbappe will occupy the central position.

France (4-3-3, right to left): 1. Lloris (GK) — 5. Kounde, 4. Varane, 18. Upamecano, 22. T. Hernandez — 7. Griezmann, 8. Tchouameni, 14. Rabiot — 11. Dembele, 9. Giroud, 10. Mbappe
