Another game, another record for Lionel Messi – not that the Argentina captain will have been thinking about this one in the slightest as he opened the scoring for his country in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s emphatic first-half penalty beyond France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris meant he had scored in each round of the finals in Qatar.

The strike put the all-time great on course to win his first World Cup with his nation, having lifted the Copa America in 2021.

After Messi made his mark from the spot again, let’s take a look at the latest landmark for the celebrated forward.

Lionel Messi World Cup goal record

Until now, no player has scored in every round in a single edition of the World Cup finals. Messi scored in the group stage, Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal and final at Qatar 2022.

The 35-year-old’s 12 goals and eight assists mean he has also had the most goal involvements of any player at the World Cup since records began in 1966.

Which games in the World Cup did Messi score in?

Messi opened his account against Saudi Arabia in Argentina’s first game, although that penalty to put them in front turned to despair as the minnows came back to win 2-1 during the second half.

Messi went on to find the net against Mexico in the group stage, Australia in the Round of 16, the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, Croatia in the final four and France in the final.
