Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton have apologised following a late-night incident over the weekend, with the superstar duo arrested in Canberra.

The NSW and Australian stars were detained by ACT Police at approximately 3.45am on Sunday morning, after they were involved in an altercation outside a nightclub following birthday celebrations for Wighton.

Wighton was charged with fighting in a public place and fail to comply with an exclusion direction, while Latrell was charged with fight in a public place, affray and resist territory public official.

The pair are expected to front court at a later date.

Eyewitness reports courtesy of Channel 7 indicated that police may have overreacted to the incident, with the close mates reportedly having a ‘friendly wrestle’ after a night on the drink celebrating Wighton’s 30th birthday.

In a statement released via No Limit Boxing, the stars apologised for their actions and bringing the game into disrepute just weeks out from the NRL season kicking off.

“For legal reasons we cannot comment on the charges that are before the Court at the moment,” they said.

“However we wanted to express remorse for putting ourselves in the position to embarrass our clubs and the NRL over the weekend.

“We were there to celebrate Jack’s 30th with family and friends. While everyone enjoyed a great night, we understand that our wrestle, as harmless as we believed it to be, was a poor decision and may have looked bad.

“We are sorry for this, and know that we need to be better when in public.

“We remain great friends, and are looking forward to proudly representing our community at All Stars this weekend.”

Both clubs confirmed that the NRL Integrity Unit are investigating the incident, with any potential sanction expected prior to the season commencing.

Latrell and Wighton are both expected to line up for the Indigenous All Stars on Saturday night.
