Newcastle have landed a replacement for Kalyn Ponga at fullback, signing Sharks flyer Lachlan Miller on a three-year deal.

Adam O’Brien confirmed last week that Ponga would make a permanent shift to the halves in 2023, leaving the No.1 position vacant at the Knights heading into the season.

Bailey Hodgson and Dane Gagai had been training at fullback during pre-season, but the latest development would indicate that O’Brien was not sold on either option.

Miller was a standout for Australia in Rugby Sevens, but made the switch to rugby league last year and scored three tries in seven appearances for Cronulla.

The 28-year-old had a year to run on his deal at the Sharks, but has been granted an early release to join Newcastle immediately.

Knights football boss Peter Parr said that Miller will give O’Brien flexibility.

“This signing provides us with more options in our backline, Parr said.

“We have signed Lachlan predominantly to play fullback, we also believe he has the versatility to play multiple positions.

“He is a gifted athlete, with great speed and a player who will add excellent value to our squad.”

Miller was unlikely to feature in the fullback position for Cronulla, with the likes of Will Kennedy, Kade Dykes and Kayal Iro all vying to lock down the important role.

The speedster scored three tries in seven appearances in his debut year in the NRL in 2022.
