An epic rivalry will look reach its conclusion, as Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman Gonzalez face off one more time. Estrada defends The Ring super-flyweight title against “Chocolatito” on December 3.
The vacant WBC super-flyweight title is also on the line. Arizona’s Desert Diamond Arena plays host to the fight.
“Estrada and Chocolatito will go down as one of the great rivalries in the sport, and on December 3, one of these two modern greats will edge ahead of the other, and that promises to make this the most thrilling of the three clashes – it’s an early Christmas present for fight fans that you do not want to miss,” Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn stated.
The two first met in 2012, with Gonzalez beating the then-prospect Estrada via unanimous decision for the WBA light-flyweight title. It would be almost a decade before the two would fight again, with Estrada going 15-1 between fights. Gonzalez went 16-2.
In the rematch in 2021, Estrada beat Gonzalez via split decision to win the WBA (Super) super-flyweight title (holding to the WBC and The Ring titles in the process). A super flyweight-record 2,529 punches were thrown in the fight, with Estrada landing 314 of 1,212 punches (26% connect rate) while Gonzalez landed 391 of 1,317 punches (30% connect rate).
Estrada’s last fight was a unanimous decision win against Argi Cortes in September, while Gonzalez rebounded with a win over Julio Cesar Martinez in March.
