Gold Coast Titans recruit Kieran Foran heaps praise on new halves partner Tanah Boyd

A new club also means a new halves partner for Kieran Foran in 2023, but there appears to be no doubt in his mind about the ability of young halfback Tanah Boyd.

The veteran five-eighth has played alongside a number of different No. 7s during his career and faces a fresh challenge this season.

Foran will link up with Boyd in the halves as the Gold Coast Titans look to rebuild following a lacklustre 2022 campaign.

Since beginning preseason with his new club in January following the World Cup, the 32-year-old has been impressed by what he has seen from a young and determined Boyd.

“(Boyd) has been awesome. Since day one he’s been beaming, he’s been confident,” Foran told media on Wednesday.

“He has really wanted to make that jersey his own and take off from where he finished the season last year … he’s really grabbed (the opportunity).

“He’s worked extremely hard throughout the preseason and I think he’s in for a huge year.”

The combination of youth and experience in the halves can be a successful one – as exemplified by the exciting duo of Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam at the Brisbane Broncos.

Despite the 10-year age gap between the pair, Foran and Boyd have already built a strong relationship, which the New Zealand five-eighth believes will help them on the field.

“We’ve taken a real liking to one another on and off the pitch,” he said.

“We’ve been spending plenty of time (together) to build that combination and that fluency out there on the field.

“It’s important that we understand one another’s games, and we’ve made a real effort to make sure we do that.”

Foran also outlined Boyd’s willingness to reach out and take on advice on the training field.

The Penrith-born product has made just 39 first-grade appearances compared to his counterpart’s 262.

According to Foran, he has been receptive to the guidance he has received so far, along with the rest of the Titans’ halves.

“It’s just been a natural progression throughout the preseason. I’m really eager and keen to help a lot of the young halves at the club, and it’s been no different with Tanah,” he explained.

“He’s obviously a really talented young footballer … and he’s got a huge career in front of him.

“So I’m just trying to pass on all the learnings I’ve learned over the years and give these guys a bit of a hand to forge their careers.

“They’ve come to me at times and asked for pointers and other times I have tipped them up on little things that I’ve seen out there –  just areas of their game that I think they might be able to get better at.”

Boyd will also be facing competition this year from fellow young halves Toby Sexton and Thomas Weaver.

Sexton, 21, featured regularly last season, whilst Weaver, 19, has recently been upgraded to the Titans’ top 30 squad.

For their 24-24 draw with the Broncos in their Week One trial match, Sexton was paired with Boyd in the halves, whilst Weaver earned a bench spot.

Foran acknowledged the potential of the Titans’ young players and highlighted how their effort and organisation helped spark a second-half comeback.

“(Our young players) are extremely talented. They’re all young guys at the start of their careers who are working really hard on specific areas of their games,” he said.

“The coaches have been doing so much work with them. We’ve done an enormous amount of work on our defence and our structures and then we’re doing work on the attacking side of things.

“So it was nice to see it come to fruition on the weekend. Obviously, things didn’t go to plan in the first half, but I was extremely happy with the way in which we fought back.

“We didn’t let them score another point in the second half and managed to claw our way back – that’s the sort of side we want to be.”
