Ghana vs Uruguay prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for World Cup 2022 Group H clash

Winless after their opening two matches, Uruguay have to beat Ghana in this Group H decider if they’re to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages at the 2022 World Cup.

Blessed with a talented squad, La Celeste have so far flattered to deceive and in this outing will be looking to avoid making unwanted history.

That’s because the South American side are looking to avoid losing two group-stage matches in a single World Cup campaign for the first time since 1974, and if they fail to score again here for a third successive group-stage match, they’ll become the first South American team to remain goalless across a whole World Cup campaign since Peru in 1978.

Ghana won’t prove to be pushovers, though, after netting five goals across two matches in Qatar despite coming into the tournament as the lowest-ranked nation.

The African side will also know that taking just a point against Uruguay in this heavyweight clash at Al Bayt Stadium could still be enough to send them through to the Round of 16 against all the odds.

Ghana vs Uruguay odds

It’s clear that despite results so far in Group H, the bookmakers are still backing Uruguay to get the job done here and defeat Ghana.

Whether or not that would be enough to progress to the knockout stages for the fourth straight World Cup remains to be seen as a win for South Korea against Portugal could see the Asian nation through instead.

What’s also clear is the fact that the bookies expect plenty of goals in this clash with the over 2.5 goals sitting at just -110.

Ghana vs Uruguay: 3 things to know

Ghana vs Uruguay team news

Ghana have so far managed to not pick up any injuries in Qatar and will be hoping their experienced frontline can once again step up against Uruguay in this decider. As such, expect the African side to stick to the same lineup that inspired them to victory against South Korea last time out.

Uruguay switched from a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 against Portugal but both formations failed to deliver a much-needed goal. Luis Suarez was benched last time out but is a player always ready to step up when needed most, while Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo is yet to see any action in Qatar after requiring surgery in late September for an abductor injury.

Ghana vs Uruguay key stats

  • The only previous meeting between these two sides at the World Cup ended in controversial fashion after Luis Suarez’s handball. Uruguay ended up progressing via a penalty shoot-out.
  • After defeat to Portugal last time out, Uruguay are looking to avoid losing two group-stage matches in a single World Cup campaign for the first time since 1974.
  • If they blank again here, Uruguay will be the first South American side to remain goalless across a World Cup campaign since Peru in 1978.

Ghana vs Uruguay prediction

  • Moneyline lean: Uruguay to win (-140)
  • Against the spread lean: Uruguay -0.5 (-155)
  • Score prediction: Ghana 1-2 Uruguay

In this match, Uruguay simply have to win to have any chance of progressing from Group H and due to that, they should play with the handbrake off here.

Their two matches at the 2022 World Cup have seen them lack much attacking firepower but when it matters most, with Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez at their disposal, Uruguay should finally get on the scoresheet as a minimum.

That could play into the hands of Ghana, who could qualify from the group with just a point here. The African nation have netted five goals across two matches but have also conceded five, which could leave the door open for Uruguay to clinically capitalise here.

Add to all this Uruguay’s prior solid record against African opposition at the World Cup, in which they’re unbeaten across four matches (W2, D2), and we fancy La Celeste to get the better of Ghana again in this one.

Ghana vs Uruguay: best bet

  • Pick: Over 2.5 goals scored
  • Odds: -110 (BetMGM)

Given the fact that both of Ghana’s two group-stage matches have finished 3-2, one a win and one a loss, we feel that backing the over 2.5 total match goals here is a bit of a no-brainer.

Whilst Ghana have displayed their prowess in front of goal, they’ve also shown their defensive vulnerabilities at this tournament, which we fully expect Uruguay to exploit here.

Granted, the South American side are still goalless at the World Cup but they have hit the woodwork a few times and look dangerous on the counter-attack. On top of that, if South Korea take the lead against a likely rotated Portugal side, both of these teams will be in danger of exiting the World Cup at the group stage and thus, this game should turn into an attacking frenzy.

Ghana vs Uruguay flier bet

  • Pick: Luiz Suarez to score anytime and Uruguay to win
  • Odds: +450 (BetMGM)

It’s just written in the stars, isn’t it?

Flash back to 2010 at the World Cup hosted by South Africa and you’ll remember Suarez blatantly handballing a goalbound Ghana effort on the line to keep the scores level. Asamoah Gyan then missed the follow-up penalty and the rest is history as the South Americans advanced via a shootout.

This match will be the first time these two sides have met since, with Suarez further adding fuel to the fire this week in his pre-match press conference by stating: “I don’t apologise about that [handball]. The Ghana player missed a penalty, not me.”

Now record top scorer for Uruguay after netting 68 goals across 136 caps, Suarez was rested for the majority of La Celeste’s second match and should get the start here.
