England vs. Senegal World Cup lineup, starting 11 for Round of 16 match at Qatar 2022

England had the luxury of mixing things up in terms of team selection as they finished Group B off by beating Wales.

The Three Lions’ progression to the knockout stages was already effectively secured, and so Gareth Southgate was able to rotate his squad with one eye on this next fixture.

That was not the case for Senegal, who needed to battle to victory over Ecuador last time out to book their place in the Round of 16.

It is partly for this reason that the two managers’ squads look in contrasting shape for this challenge – here are the projected lineups for both teams.

England vs. Senegal lineups

Harry Kane has dismissed concerns that he has been hampered by a foot injury during England’s World Cup campaign.

A Golden Boot winner in Russia four-and-a-half years ago, the Tottenham man has yet to get off the mark in Qatar, though he has registered the most assists (three) of any player at the tournament.

Regardless, he insists a knock sustained during the Three Lions’ 6-2 victory over Iran is not behind his lack of goals.

“First and foremost my foot feels fine, it’s been getting better day by day. I’m in a place now where I almost don’t feel it at all so that’s great,” he said.

“Form-wise, I feel like I’ve been playing well. The goals are what I’m going to be judged on most but as always I’m a calm individual and I focus on what I can do best for the team.”

England predicted starting 11

(4-3-3 right to left): 1. Pickford (GK) — 12. Trippier, 5. Stones, 6. Maguire,  3. Shaw — 8. Henderson, 22. Bellingham, 4. Rice — 11. Rashford, 9. Kane, 10. Sterling

  • Injured: none
  • Suspended: none
  • Absent: Ben White (out of tournament)

Southgate moved to a 4-3-3 for the win over Wales and may like the idea of using an additional orthodox central midfielder as the tournament progresses – a move that would benefit Jordan Henderson.

Marcus Rashford may also have earned a start in attack thanks to his three goals thus far, with Bukayo Saka missing out as a result.

  • Injured: Cheikhou Kouyate, Sadio Mane (out for tournament)
  • Suspended: Idrissa Gueye

With Idrissa Gueye out through suspension and Cheikhou Kouyate still injured, Nampalys Mendy could be in line to start in the centre of midfield.

Senegal should otherwise line up in familiar fashion.
