What happened to Christian Eriksen?

On June 12, 2021 in Denmark’s opening match of Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen had a heart attack and collapsed on the pitch at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen in the 42nd minute.

Medical assistance arrived instantly, and Eriksen was given CPR and a defibrillator was also used before he was stretchered off. He was taken to hospital where he was stabilised and eventually had surgery, before being discharged on June 18.

After three months of recuperation, he began training with a local Danish side in an attempt to return to playing football, before moving to Premier League club Brentford in January of this year.

He then joined powerhouse Manchester United in August and has been a mainstay in the side, whilst also making his return to the national team.

How can Christian Eriksen play after heart attack?

After his heart attack, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable-cardioverter-defibrillator, which is designed to prevent against future cardiac arrests.

This ultimately is why Eriksen was able to continue to play football again.

After training at a local Danish side, he attempted to play again for his club at the time Inter Milan, however, due to league rules stating he was unable to play with that device fitted, his contract was eventually cancelled.

Where does Christian Eriksen play?

After leaving Inter Milan, he signed with Premier League club Brentford in the January transfer window, linking up with countryman Thomas Frank and a host of other Danish players in West London, making his debut in February 2022.

When he arrived, the club was in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle, however his performances helped lift the team clear and to a 13th-placed finish.

At the expiry of his short-term contract, he signed with Manchester United under new manager Erik ten Haag, and has made 20 appearances in all competitions so far this season scoring one goal.

He also returned to the national team in March 2022 and is now firmly in the starting side.

How old is Christian Eriksen?

Christian Eriksen is 30-years-old, meaning he is in the peak of his career for a central midfielder.

He is one of Denmark’s most experienced players, playing for the side at two World Cups and two European Championships.

With the Qatar World Cup being his third and the next one coming in 2026 when he will be 34, there is a chance it could be his last.

However, as one of Denmark’s most important players, there is a good chance he could still represent Denmark in four year if they qualify.

Is Christian Eriksen still good?

Many were concerned that after his heart attack, Eriksen’s abilities may have waned.

However his performances for club and country suggest that he has bounced back incredibly quickly; during his time at Brentford he created the third most chances in the league and was instrumental in keeping them safe from relegation.

And under Ten Haag at Manchester United, he has established himself in a starting side that is looking to challenge for the top four once again as well as the UEFA Europa League title.

He also scored within two minutes of his return to the national side, and is an ever-present in a team which is tipped to perform strongly at the 2022 World Cup.
