Can Kylian Mbappe set World Cup goals record? When France star could make FIFA tournament history

French attacker Kylian Mbappe is undoubtedly already one of the best players in the world, and has the potential to be the best player in the world for the next decade.

At just 23-years-old he has won countless trophies and already scored 221 goals in more than 300 club games, and has 33 goals in 63 games for Les Bleus.

His World Cup record is already staggering, he became the youngest French player to score at the 2018 World Cup at 19, and became the second teenager after Pele to score in a World Cup final. At the 2022 tournament, he is already leading the Golden Boot rate with five goals in his first four matches.

This is leading to many fans and pundits to predict that he could break the World Cup goalscoring record at some point in his career, and given he is yet to reach his peak, it certainly is not unreasonable to suggest that.

Kylian Mbappe World Cup goals

Kylian Mbappe scored his first World Cup goal in a group game against Peru in 2018, which was the only goal in a 1-0 win that secured France’s progression to the knockout rounds.

He then scored two goals against Argentina in the round of 16 in a standout performance, before scoring a goal in France’s 4-2 triumph in the final over Croatia with a 25-yard strike. His performance at the tournament earned him the Young Player of the Tournament award.

In 2022 he started well, scoring in a 4-1 victory over Australia before netting twice in a 2-1 win over Denmark. He came off the bench against Tunisia and failed to score, but then on his return to the starting side against Poland he bagged twice to help Les Bleus to a 3-1 win.

When can Mbappe set World Cup goals record?

Given that Mbappe is only 23, there is every chance that he still could have two to three more World Cups that he would be able to play in, which means he also has an incredibly high chance of breaking the World Cup goalscoring record.

The record is currently 16, which means Mbappe need seven to equal it and eight to break it. There is a high chance he will score at least one more goal at the current tournament, and if he keeps up the form he has shown at his first World Cups into his next one in 2026, he could very well break the record in a shorter span than some previous record holders.

He will also be near the peak of his powers at the next two tournaments when he is 27 and 31 respectively, which makes many think that it is more a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ he will break the record.

Who has most World Cup goals?

The current record goalscorer in the World Cup is Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who broke the record at the 2014 World Cup in the amazing 7-1 semifinal win over Brazil.

He broke the record of the Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who scored 15 goals over three tournaments, including eight goals in 2002 as Brazil won the trophy.
