Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has suffered a broken leg and will see at least three months on the sideline.

According to reports, Maxwell was at a 50th birthday party in Melbourne on Saturday when he slipped and fell in the backyard.

The Herald Sun stated that the all-rounder was not intoxicated and the injury occurred early in the evening.

Maxwell has been operated on and will be sorely missed in the upcoming One Day International (ODI) Series against England.

Chairman of selectors George Bailey said the injury was unfortunate for Maxwell and the Australian team.

“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in the last few games,” Bailey said.

“Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery.’’

Sean Abbott has been rushed into the squad ahead of the first match on Thursday, November 17 at Adelaide Oval.

Game two (November 19) will be played at the SCG while the series will be rounded at in Melbourne at the MCG on November 22.

Melbourne Stars GM Blair Crouch also spoke to the void that Maxwell will leave in the upcoming Big Bash tournament this Summer.

“Glenn is obviously a huge part of the Melbourne Stars and we wish him well in his recovery,” Crouch said.

“He will continue to be a key part of the club during the start of the season as he works his way back to full fitness and we look forward to seeing him soon.”

Maxwell was also planning on ending his three-year Sheffield Shield break in an effort to push for the Australian Test team ahead of Februrary’s tour of India.

In between international commitments and a tight schedule, the right-hand batter was unable to put his best foot forward.

The 34-year-old has not played first-class cricket since October 2019 and the unfortunate injury might mean the wait could be extended and his chances of making the test team downed.
