Australia vs Denmark World Cup lineup, starting 11 for Group D match at Qatar 2022

With Group D leaders France already through to the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup, Australia and Denmark are fully aware that their meeting is essentially an early knockout game.

It’s the Aussies who hold the advantage going into this match, having collected three points from two games to their opponents’ one.

However, the respective pedigree of the sides no doubt makes the Europeans fancied, on paper at least, to claim the win they need to go through to the next round.

Below are the projected lineups for both teams.

Australia vs Denmark lineups

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand has hinted he may look to get as much experience on the pitch as possible as his team bid to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

The Danes have reached the knockout stages in four of their five World Cup finals appearances, but know nothing less than three points will do against Australia if they are to keep that fine record up.

“Of course there is pressure,” Hjulmand said. “(But) these players are very, very used to big games and the more experience you have of these kinds of events, from maybe feeling the pressure, you feel pride.

“It’s a dream since you were a kid and now you are actually in a position where you can go out and play football for something. It is privilege.”

Australia predicted starting 11

Australia (4-4-1-1, right to left): 1. Ryan (GK) — 5. Karacic, 19. Souttar, 4. Rowles, 16. Behich — 7. Leckie, 13. Mooy, 22. Irvine, 23. Goodwin – 14. McGree – 15. Duke

  • Injured: Martin Boyle (removed from squad), Nathaniel Atkinson
  • Suspended: None

Nathaniel Atkinson remains in doubt for the rest of the tournament, so Fran Karacic will likely keep his spot at right-back.  Australia could be otherwise unchanged.

Denmark predicted starting 11

Denmark (3-4-3, right to left): 1. Schmeichel (GK) – 2. Andersen, 4. Kjaer, 6. A. Christensen – 13. Kristensen, 23. Hojbjerg, 10. Eriksen, 5. Maehle —  25 Lindstrom. 14 Damsgaard, 21. Cornelius

  • Injured: Delaney
  • Suspended: None

After being rested for the Danes’ defeat to France last time out, Simon Kjaer is expected to return at the heart of defence.

Denmark could, though, stick with a 3-4-3 (as opposed to the 3-5-2 used in their opener) as they look for greater attacking thrust in a must-win fixture.

The fact that Thomas Delaney‘s tournament is over due to a knee injury certainly makes the decision to lose a midfielder far easier.
