Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will continue their preparations for the restart of the 2022/23 season this month as they play their second friendly of the mid-season break against Italian champions AC Milan.

The Gunners began their campaign in the ‘Dubai Super Cup’ by thrashing Lyon 3-0 in their first game and picked up an extra bonus point in the post-game penalty shootout for good measure.

They return to domestic action on December 26, when they’ll face West Ham in a London derby to kick their season off again. Until then, this break in Dubai has certainly provided Arteta’s side the opportunity to test out their match fitness, and against Lyon, they showed just why they’re five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Some scintillating attacking football was on show in the first half at the Al Maktoum Stadium, as Arsenal, missing a significant contingent of their first XI due to the World Cup, put on a show against Lyon. They were 3-0 up inside 40 minutes thanks to Gabriel’s bullet header, Eddie Nketiah’s breakaway finish, and a thunderbolt from the edge of the area by Fabio Vieira.

In Milan, the Gunners face much sterner opposition than mid-table Ligue 1 side Lyon. The Rossoneri are the Scudetto holders, having won their first Italian league title in over a decade last season. Arsenal are attempting to end a 19-year drought of their own on the Premier League title front, and this friendly gives them another golden opportunity to prepare for a second half of the season that could end with that trophy being held aloft, a sight not seen since the days when they still played at Highbury.

Which players are available for Arsenal?

Arsenal saw 10 of their players leave to play in the World Cup, the fifth-most of any Premier League club, and with the final four decided, only one, France’s William Saliba, is still active in the tournament. The nine returning players will not be back in training in time for this friendly, though, meaning the Gunners will rely on the players who performed so well against Lyon, particularly in that dominant first-half showing.

Not all of the players returning from Qatar did so due to their country’s elimination. Gabriel Jesus, one of the Gunners’ key men this season, suffered an injury playing for Brazil in the group stages and had to return home with an expected lay-off period of up to three months. Meanwhile, Ben White withdrew from the England squad for personal reasons without playing at all in Qatar, and Mikel Arteta will be hopeful that both are able to return for Arsenal in a timely manner.

Arsenal vs. AC Milan lineups

Given the situation of players returning from World Cup duty and it being a mid-season friendly, predicting the teams for this one is not easy. However, The Sporting News looks at how both managers could line up with the players at their disposal, with Arsenal likely to field a side of similar strength to the one that dispatched Lyon 3-0 five days ago.

Dubai Super Cup: Why will there be a penalty shoot-out in Arsenal vs. AC Milan?

The set of friendlies these two sides are involved in is the ‘Dubai Super Cup’, which also features both Liverpool and Lyon. They’ll each play two games in a round-robin tournament, in which they’ll get the customary three points for a win, and two, rather than one, for a draw.

However, penalty shootouts will take place after each of the four games, with the winners of the shootout gaining an extra ‘bonus’ point. The side who finish top of the four-team table crowned will be champions.

Arsenal won their first game against Lyon 3-0 and also triumphed 2-1 in the penalty shootout. With Milan yet to play, Arsenal lead the way with a maximum of four points, likely going some way to securing this friendly trophy as the first silverware of 2022/23 for the Gunners.
