Argentina versus Netherlands is a classic World Cup clash, which has produced some indelible memories for two of the most talented and passionate football countries in the world. Friday’s 2022 quarterfinal in Qatar promises nothing short of the same.
Messi is on a quest for a first World Cup in his last career tournament, but the Dutch are on a 19-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. And their manager, Louis Van Gaal, hasn’t lost any of his 11 World Cup matches in charge of the Netherlands, who are seeking their first-ever men’s title (despite reaching three finals).
The last time these two nations met on the World Cup stage, it took a penalty shootout to decide a winner in a 2014 World Cup semifinal won by Messi and Argentina over Van Gaal’s Oranje. The two iconic figures face off again, this time with a spot in the semis on the line.
Neither team has truly sparkled thus far in this tournament. Messi has helped carry Argentina to the final eight despite some challenging moments, including a shock loss to Saudi Arabia and a late scare against Australia in the Round of 16. The Dutch have been criticized back home for uninspired play, despite winning three of their four matches thus far, including against the USA in the Round of 16

Argentina will wear the sky blue and white shirt vs. Netherlands in the quarter finals. But for the first time at this World Cup, they will wear white shorts and white socks, not black shorts and black socks. 🇦🇷 pic.twitter.com/Vm0IBQrHHY

Argentina vs Netherlands lineups, team news
The Argentine press is reporting that manager Lionel Scaloni could opt for one of two lineups depending on the health of winger Angel Di Maria (right quad), who sat out the last match against Australia. If he’s available, the Albiceleste will go with their traditional 4-3-3 formation. If not he could mirror the Dutch side’s 3-5-2 by inserting Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez in the backline.
Rodrigo De Paul (right hamstring) is the other injury concern and he hasn’t looked himself in this tournament. Leandro Paredes is an option to potentially replace him in the lineup. The other regular toss-up spot is Marcos Acuna or Nicolas Tagliafico at left-back depending on the manager’s preference on the day.
Argentina (4-3-3, right to left): 23. E. Martinez (GK) — 26. Molina, 13. Romero, 19. Otamendi, 8. Acuna — 7. De Paul, 24. Fernandez, 20. Mac Allister — 11. Di Maria, 10. Messi, 9. Alvarez
There’s not much drama to speak of in the Dutch camp, where everyone is fully fit and ready to go. Jeremie Frimpong was the last player to pick up an injury, but that was over a week ago. Memphis Depay has worked his way to full fitness during the tournament and is now a starter.
The only lineup conversation could potentially involve Teun Koopmeiners in central midfield in place of his Atalanta teammate Marten De Roon, or Steven Bergwijn to partner Depay up front with breakout star Cody Gakpo playing behind them. But the team that started against the USA was a balanced unit and is likely to get another go (below).
Netherlands (3-4-1-2, right to left): 23. Noppert (GK) — 2. Timber, 4. Van Dijk, 5. Ake — 22. Dumfries, 15. De Roon, 21. De Jong, 17. Blind — 14. Klaassen — 8. Gakpo, 10. Depay.
