Angel Di Maria hadn’t yet made a start in the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup prior to Sunday’s final. He proceeded to set the game alight for Argentina.

Slaloming down the left flank for La Albiceleste, Di Maria was a menace. With a series of clever flicks and deceptive passes, the Juventus man was the star of the show in the first half against France.

Di Maria earned the first penalty, one which Lionel Messi slotted away coolly to give the Argentines the lead. Then, he got in on the action himself, finishing off a beautiful Argentinian sequence with a calm finish over Hugo Lloris.

The goal meant the world to Di Maria, who could be seen crying as the man born on Valentine’s Day in 1988 flashed his signature heart celebration.

It hasn’t been the easiest of tournaments for Di Maria, who has struggled with injury over the course of this year’s World Cup. But he’s certainly left an indelible mark on this year’s final.

Angel Di Maria injury

Di Maria came into this year’s World Cup afflicted with a thigh injury. He hadn’t played a game for Juve in over a month prior to the tournament. Despite his health, Di Maria started each of Argentina’s three group stage games, nabbing an assist in La Albiceleste’s 2-0 win over Mexico.

He still seemed plagued by the ailment, though, starting on the bench in Argentina’s Round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal fixtures.

Whatever he was dealing with seemingly subsided ahead of the final, though. Argentinians, rejoice.

Di Maria was subbed off in the 64th minute of the final, but he made his mark, scoring for Argentina in a final for the fourth time, after the 2022 Finalissima, 2021 Copa American and 2008 Olympics.

Angel Di Maria age

Angel Di Maria is 34 years old. He’s the third-oldest player in Argentina’s squad, trailing only Messi (35) and Nicolas Otamendi.

Although Messi has received plenty of plaudits in what is likely his final World Cup, Di Maria has been one of the standouts of this Argentinian generation. The former PSG, Real Madrid and Benfica man has been one of the best playmakers in the world over the years. And he proved as much on Sunday.

He joined Messi as two of only four players aged 34 of over to score in a World Cup final. That’s some exclusive company.

Angel Di Maria nickname

Di Maria is often called “El Fideo.” Fideo means noodle in Spanish and, given Di Maria’s lanky figure, it’s no surprise that he’s received the pasta-based moniker.
