A patient has suffered severe burns following a fire in an operating theatre while they were in the middle of surgery.
It happened on Tuesday at St John of God Subiaco Hospital, a private facility close to the Perth CBD, with a full investigation now underway.
Due to privacy laws, details on the incident is scarce, but it’s understood the man being operated on was badly burned when a blaze somehow broke out while he was receiving routine surgery.
The man has since been taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, which houses the State Burns Service, and remains critical but stable as of Friday afternoon.
St John of God Subiaco Hospital acting chief executive Jenny Brenton confirmed that a “serious incident” occurred on Tuesday, resulting in an “adverse outcome for a patient”.
“The patient has been transferred to a tertiary hospital for specialist care,” she said in a statement.
“We advised the patient’s family of the situation immediately following the incident and we recognise this is a difficult time for them.
“We have commenced a full investigation and analysis to determine the cause. We will continue to keep the patient and family informed as this progresses.
“We are unable to comment any further about the circumstances and details due to privacy laws.”
