Victorian election 2022: Liberal David Southwick lashes out at Daniel Andrews after Labor win

The deputy leader of the Liberal Party in Victoria has lashed out at re-elected Labor Premier Daniel Andrews.

Less than three hours after counting started on Saturday night, the race was called for Labor. The win will make Andrews the state’s longest-serving Labor Premier, but despite this fact David Southwick told Sky News he was “the worst” premier the state had seen.

“I’ve never seen a campaign like this that has got into gutter politics. It got dirty. Victorians are over that regardless of the result,” he said.

“This is the worst Premier Victoria’s ever seen. We’ve got a Premier that shows no leadership.

“He’s gotta change his attitude, he’s gotta change the way he governs because he’s divided people.

“Okay, he might look like he’s more popular. I don’t know why but quite frankly we have a divided state at the moment.”

Mr Southwick is in a tough fight to retain his seat of Caulfield, which was the most marginal seat in Victoria. After more than 50 per cent of the vote has been counted, Labor’s Lior Harel looks like she could steal the seat.

Outgoing Labor MP Martin Pakula, who was among a number of senior MPs who retired this election, had his own words to share about the Liberals criticism of Andrews.

“Framing an entire election campaign around the theory (hope?) that everyone hates Dan as much as you hate Dan was always a Hail Mary strategy,” he tweeted.

“It’s hard to hear the community clearly when you spend all your time in an echo chamber.”
