WHAT IS SINGLES’ DAY?
Singles’ Day was originally started by Nanjing University students in the early ‘90s, who exchanged gifts with one another as an anti-Valentine’s Day gesture focused on friendship over romance. Since then, businesses have hopped on the ‘celebrating singles’ bandwagon by offering up huge discounts.
November 11 was chosen as the day for the shopping event as the 11s symbolise “single sticks” or “bare sticks”, Chinese slang for bachelors.
In 2021, Alibaba and JD – two of China’s biggest online shopping platforms – reached a new total Singles’ Day sales record of US$139 billion. This roughly equals out to about AUD $204 billion.
WHEN IS SINGLES’ DAY?
Singles’ Day, or China Singles’ Day as it’s also known, is always held on November 11.
This year, Singles’ Day starts directly after the Aussie sales event Click Frenzy, meaning many local retailers have chosen to offer shoppers deals that cover the two events.
