Sariah Saibu: Australian actress suddenly dies

An up-and-coming Australian actress and model has suddenly died.

Sariah Saibu, who starred in award-winning coming-of-age romance film Beautiful They, died on January 30.

She also worked as a model and a dancer in music videos.

Ms Saibu’s loved ones paid tributes to the young actress.

“This morning we lost our darling Sariah,” her aunt Cassandra Colvin wrote.

“I am struggling to find the words to express the grief that I and her family are feeling at this time.

“RIP beautiful – all our love always.”

Friends remembered Ms Saibu as a “bubbly, beautiful soul” with an “amazing sense of humour.”

“She always had time for a chat and poured her whole heart into he friends and her passions,” tone wrote on a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral..

“Rest in power Sariah, we won’t forget you.”

Another friend wrote: “Sariah is the Queen, the Karaoke King, the Star, and the Icon.

“The Princess of not only Perth, but Darwin. The protagonist of our lives and gem of our hearts.

“Sariah made everlasting impressions on her community, which has been felt and greatly appreciated by her family and closest friends.”

“Kind” and “bubbly” Ms Saibu played Violet in Beautiful They, a “tender, visually-charged, uplifting queer surf-romance about the nuance of gender”.

The short movie was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and the Melbourne International Film Festival.

The film was won the won the Australian Director’s Guild’s Best Direction of a Short Film award and was nominated for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts’s (AACTA) Best Short Form Drama award.

It was also named the best film at Queer Screen Mardi Gras 2022 and the City Of Melbourne’s Best Australian Short Film.
