A man is in hospital with serious injuries following what has been described a suspicious house fire in Melbourne’s northern suburbs on Tuesday morning.
Victoria Police said emergency services were called to an address on Rhodes Pde in the suburb of Pascoe Vale just before 5am following reports of a smashed window, which then progressed to reports of a fire at the address.
They said a man was consequently taken to hospital with critical injuries, while a woman, who is understood to be known to the man, escaped without injury.
“Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the fire, which is believed to be suspicious,” police said in a statement.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria told NCA Newswire they were called to Pascoe Vale just before 4.40am, where paramedics treated a man in his 60s for serious burns before transporting him to the Alfred Hospital.
Fire Rescue Victoria said they received “multiple” Triple Zero (000) calls just after 4:30.
“On arrival firefighters found a two-storey unit fully alight,” an FRV spokesperson told NCA Newswire.
Firefighters assisted a number of people evacuate their units, while the fire was contained in just over twenty minutes, the spokesperson said.
As of Tuesday afternoon the man remained in a critical condition, the Alfred Hospital confirmed.
