Police believe the man, who was 65 years old and from the south eastern Melbourne suburb of Chelsea, lit the fire himself.

Early reports suggest he had formerly been in a relationship with the woman who resided there.

The man was rushed to hospital with what Ambulance Victoria described as serious injuries on Tuesday, but died at the Alfred Hospital overnight.

On Tuesday, police said emergency services responded to calls a window had been smashed and a house was on fire on Rhodes Pde, Pascoe Vale, before 5am.

Police continue to investigate the fire, and will prepare a report for the coroner.
