It’s one of the most prestigious travel lists in the world, but Australia has failed to make the cut in any of the National Geographic ‘best of’ categories.

The annual list, which recognises the best places to visit for an adventure fix or to embrace nature, delves into the 25 places that people should seriously consider visiting in 2023.

The list, which is chosen by the global editors of National Geographic, vote on five categories being Community, Nature, Culture, Family, and Adventure.

While the community list focuses on places that stand out from the rest for sustainability, adventure dishes up suggestions that meet just that — offers plenty of adrenaline.

Taking out the top spots for the ‘community’ category, the publication encourages travellers to visit the hidden Greek island of Karpathos, or spend a long weekend in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that honours both its brewers and its cultural communities.

Meanwhile in the ‘adventure’ section, neighbouring country New Zealand was put high on the list alongside Choquequirao in Peru, Utah in the US and Austria — with Australia failing to get a look in.

Speaking to local media, the Utah Office of Tourism manager Vicki Varela said it’s no surprise the state made top of the list.

“Utahns and visitors alike know that Utah is a place for a wide range of transformational experiences,” Ms Varela said.

“National Geographic’s ‘Best of the World’ recognition is a wonderful affirmation of our beautiful places.”

If you’re after a more ‘family’ type stay in 2023 — the publication suggests Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, San Francisco, Colombia and even Manchester in the UK.

According to the publication, Manchester came out in the top five given the city’s growing number of attractions to keep active and curious families busy, including exciting festivals, outdoor urban adventures, and eclectic museums.
