The Melbourne Cup may have landed the biggest betting plunges of the day but one Victorian punter was laughing all the way to the bank before the great race even took place.

TAB is reporting a customer put a $1 bet on an early quaddie, picking four straight winners between race 3 and race 6.

Race three at Flemington, the Resimax Group Subzero Handicap, was won by $9.70 runner Love Tap, followed by $17.90 outsider High Approach in the TAB Trophy.

The third leg was Renosu, the $32.70 outsider in The Schweppervescence Plate and Furphy Plate winner Bartholomeu Dias at $28.50 leaving the punter as the only one to claim the dividend to make it a very happy Melbourne Cup day.

On the other side of the coin, Realm of Flowers firmed from as far as $16 before the race to as short as $7 before the race — but finished fifth to the disappointment of many.

Though those punters can be joined in their misery by one punter who put a $400,000 bet on pre-race favourite Deauville Legend.

They’ll be joined by syndicate Wolfden who put $20,000 on Numerian to win at odds of $91 in a bid to win $1.8m. Numerian ended up being third last past the post some 73 lengths back.

However, there’ll also be plenty of happy punters who jumped on Gold Trip for the victory.

TAB had a win bet of $4100 and place bet of $7750 which returned $69,700 and $38,750 respectively.

Another TAB punter took hope $171,301 for calling the First4 of Gold Trip, Emissary, High Emocean and Deauville Legend.

Ladbrokes reportedly also nabbed a $10k bet on Gold Trip to place, taking home a cool, $65,000.

Sounds like some people will be having a great night.
