A ski boat with eight people on-board “sank like a stone” when it filled with water in a lake in Victoria’s alpine district on Thursday night.

All eight were rescued in dramatic circumstances on Lake Eildon after police received reports a boat had capsized at about 6.50pm, with two people clinging to a tree in the water while the others had managed to swim to shore.

Of the three people initially taken to hospital only one remains, believed to be a man in his 20s who was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital with hypothermia.

Speaking to radio station 3AW on Friday, Inspector James Dalton of the Water Police said the vessel “sank like a stone” when a wave filled it with water.

Inspector Dalton said eight people had taken a ski boat out, having originally been on a houseboat, before the weather turned ugly.

He said all eight were without life jackets.

Victoria Police said the driver of the boat was assisting police.

Last month, a 34-year-old man drowned after he went swimming on Lake Eildon on New Year’s Day.
