A man charged over the death of his wife in a horrifying golf buggy crash on their honeymoon will fight the charge, a court has been told.

Robbie Awad – also known as Robbie Morgan – was charged by Queensland Police in November with causing the death of his wife, Marina Hanna, while honeymooning on Hamilton Island in mid-2022.

Mr Awad had only laid his wife to death just months before being issued with a notice to appear in court.

He is facing charges of driving without due care and attention causing death, failure to wear an approved seatbelt by the driver, failure to wear an approved seatbelt by the passenger and using a mobile phone.

Mr Awad, 30, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention causing death when his matter was briefly mentioned at Proserpine Magistrates Court, in the Whitsundays, on Monday.

A brief of evidence was ordered to be served by January 23.

Mr Awad’s matter will return to court on February 6 next year for mention, with his appearance excused.

Police initially labelled the crash a “tragic accident” after the couple’s golf buggy overturned on June 20.

Ms Hanna, 29, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene while Mr Awad, who was the driver, was not injured.

They had tied the knot just 10 days before at a lavish ceremony in Sydney.

Police now allege in court documents Mr Awad drove the golf buggy without due care or attention along Coral Sea Ave on Hamilton Island, causing Ms Morgan’s death.

It is also alleged he did not ensure his own seatbelt or Ms Hanna’s were secured and he was using a mobile phone while driving the buggy.

According to his bail undertaking, Mr Awad must reside at his home in Quakers Hill, in Sydney.

He does not have any other conditions.
