Darling Point home sells for $17.15m, $2m over price guide, at closed auction

There were bargain hunters and serious bidders at a closed auction for a grand home … and sufficient interest for it to sell $2m above the price guide.

“There are a lot of opportunistic buyers in the current marketplace,” says buyers agent Rob Gettens of Hastings Prestige.

“This one could have either way, for a bargain price or closer to $20m.”

He’d made just the one opening bid for his client at $14m for the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home with double garage at 22 Sutherland Cres, Darling Point, which records show was bought in 2007 for $4.7m by Darlinghurst nephrologist Professor Jacob Sevastos and his wife, Christine.

They later did an extension in 2010 and added the stunning pool in 2013.

Up for auction with a $15m price guide last Saturday, with just the seven registered bidders, and the sales agents, Michael Pallier and Daphne Sauvage of Sotheby’s, plus a select few buyer’s agents, allowed in, it sold under the hammer for $17.15m.

Another buyers agent, Steven Langman of Cohen Handler, who was present but not registered, said that was a good price.

There were four active bidders.

“I think it was, they were guiding $15m, the house was a bit dated and it was an upside down layout, so not for a young family.

“It was bought by an Asian couple, so it was a downsizer type of house, and the view was nice.

“The market’s very challenging because there’s just no stock, nothing decent.

“There are definitely buyers, but they’re more discerning and fussy, and there are too many buyer’s agents.”
