Victorian bomb squad officers shut down a major suburban street on Tuesday afternoon after a possibly suspicious item was found in a car crash wreck.

A Range Rover crashed into a pole on Racecourse Rd in Kensington at about 12:30pm before officers were called in, according to police.

“Police searched the vehicle and allegedly located a firearm and a possible suspicious item,” a spokesperson said.

The bomb response unit then inspected the item and deemed it “safe and non-suspicious”.

Officers arrested a 30-year-old Taylors Hill man at the scene. He is now assisting police with their inquiries.

Roads are set to reopen shortly, with VicRoads reporting the streets are still closed in both directions near Stubbs St.

Anyone with information, dashcam vision or anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
