Annette and Neil McNamara had a tough choice to make.
Move to be closer to their adult children or stay in the tropical oasis they’d built in Parap.
Thankfully for Darwin homebuyers, the couple opted to sell up and move.
“Our children have all left the NT and we all want to be together in the one place,” Mrs McNamara said.
“Otherwise, there is no way we would be selling.”

The McNamaras’ executive home at 2 Notley Place, Parap, was completed six years ago with the Darwin lifestyle and climate in mind.
“We built it from the ground up,” Mrs McNamara said.
“We wanted something where we both put in our own ideas on what we found comfortable in a home and what we liked.”
The end result was a solid, private house with open interiors, high ceilings, polished concrete floors and indoor-outdoor flow, all surrounded by gardens on a fenced 866 sqm block.
There are four bedrooms, a huge study, an art studio/workshop with external access, water features, an in-ground pool and a self-contained unit.
Mr McNamara said he wanted a home that would last.
“The house is completely core-filled blockwork with a cyclone shelter in one of the rooms,” he said.
“And I wanted it to be a large house, not pokey little rooms.”

Mrs McNamara wanted an oasis where they could entertain their family and friends.
“The layout is very spacious, very open and every window has a green element as they overlook the gardens,” she said.
“I love our main bathroom because it overlooks our hanging arbour.
“That hanging garden, I love, and the pond, the pool and the entrance.
“My idea for the entrance was to take in as many elements as possible, so we have water with the beautiful fountain and pond, glass with the louvres, stone in the stone wall and we’ve also got the concrete, which is a feature wall.”

Mrs McNamara said it was also important the home was all on one level.
“That was for my mother, who had a walker,” she said.
“You can enter the home and there isn’t one step you have to go up.”
The house has 473 sqm under roof.
Each of the four bedrooms in the main house has an ensuite and the main bedroom has sliding doors opening to a deck.
Sliding doors on either side of the open plan living, dining and kitchen area open to gardens and outdoor entertaining.

The kitchen has stone benchtops, a butler’s pantry and a servery window to outside.
A swimming pool is at the end of the outdoor entertaining space and the granny flat has a bedroom area, ensuite and kitchenette.
“Everything is tropical and private,” Mrs McNamara said.
“It’s like living in a resort.
“And it’s in a wonderful area being Parap.
“We’re walking distance to the markets, the Trailer Boat Club and all the restaurants.”
The home has great indoor-outdoor flow.
