An 18-year-old has died from a knife wound to his chest in what could have been a tragic accident.

Bailey Jones suffered a stab wound at about 7pm on Friday night at a gathering of close friends in the NSW south coast town of Bomaderry.

There are reports the teenager had been playing with a large knife in the driveway before he tripped and fell, causing the blade to pierce his chest are being investigated, but police say nothing is being ruled out.

Paramedics and police were called and took the teen to hospital, but he could not be revived.

A crime scene was quickly established with those at the gathering cooperating fully with police.

Detective Acting Inspector Ian Griffin said the knife would be “forensically examined” but at this stage, there was no cause for community concern.

“It’s a terrible set of circumstances but there’s certainly nothin gin our investigation that should concern the community, and we will continue to try to find out what has occurred,” Inspector Griffin said.

“It’s too early to speculate at this time, but our eyes are open to all possibilities.”

Friends and family have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to the 18-year-old.

One wrote: “RIP Bailey love you brother and see u (sic) on the other side”.

Another wrote “He was taken too soon”.

Bailey’s aunt wrote “Rest in peace Bails, I know Nanny will look after you”.
