West Coast Eagles forward Oscar Allen got his 2023 season off to a horror start, missing an “absolute soda” from point-blank range during Saturday’s match against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.
In the first quarter of the Round 1 contest, Allen retrieved the Sherrin after it flew over a marking pack inside 50, gifting the 23-year-old a clear shot directly in front of goal.
But after sprinting a few steps towards the posts, he miscued a dribble kick from the goalsquare that trickled through for a behind, extending West Coast’s lead to five points.

Allen, who had moments earlier kicked his first goal of the season, sunk to his knees in disbelief.
“He missed an absolute soda,” former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna cried on Fox Footy.
Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall continued: “Oh no … I think he panicked, he thought he was going to get run down, surely.
“Because all of a sudden he tried to throw it down on the boot as quickly as possible.
“That was just panic.”
Allen was playing his first AFL match since Round 23 of the 2021 season after a foot injury kept him sidelined last year.
The Kangaroos held a 7.7 (40) to 4.4 (28) lead at half-time.
