AND THE TECHNOLOGY LEARNING AREA |
Empowering for a range of life situations
An empowerment approach to food and nutrition education is needed to enable students to determine what those human needs are, the nature of the products and processes that will meet those needs, and how these products and processes can be achieved despite obstacles. In this way, we will contribute to our students becoming active and informed participants in society - they will be able to make personal informed choices and will be able to create an environment whereby healthy food choices are easy food choices, whether in the field of paid or unpaid work, family and community life, leisure or recreation.
The alternative to this is to run the risk of students developing design, make and appraise abilities which have a limited lifespan; which enable someone else to identify the products or processes to be designed and made, let someone else decide what their needs are, someone else determine their life path.

Students should engage in learning experiences which: 1. enable them to develop autonomy with respect to their personal food-related behaviours; and 2. enable them to bring about change in the community such that they contribute towards developing a society whereby healthy choices are easy choices. Further, these learning experiences should be developed with the five key concepts in mind. |
